Molding for walls has a long history, some of which is functional and some of it is strictly cosmetic. In modern homes, decorative molding is mainly just that – for visual aesthetics.
Few architectural features have this long a history, yet still remain relevant today. In order to make decisions about what you may want to incorporate into the interior design of your home, you have to first know about some of the options that you have.
Knowing About Your Options
While there are plenty of other options out there for decorative molding, some of the most highly sought after ones include:
Baseboards – One of the most common wall moldings, and often overlooked. This helps walls look better yet tends not to get noticed, unless there is a lack of it. Baseboards help protect the base and lower corners of your walls.
Chair Rails – As the name would imply, this type of wall protection helps safeguard walls against where chairs commonly make contact. However, it is not as commonly used for just function now as it once was.
Casing – This is the trim that covers the gap around the exterior perimeter of a door. You would never see a doorway without this, unless something else was in place. It is not visually pleasing to see the gaps that this trim conceals.
Crown Molding – Probably the most commonly thought of when discussing wall molding. Although this serves no real purpose other than cosmetic, it can help walls look taller and rooms look bigger. While it looks dramatic in spaces with vaulted or cathedral ceilings, it can be used in rooms without. The end result is the illusion that the walls are taller than they actually are.
